Evocation of the body, Veneration of the Erotic
Georges Bataille writes, “eroticism is a movement towards the limits of our own subjectivity and humanity, a transgression that dissolves the rational world but is always transitory”.
The work touches on themes of primal instinct, sacred earth, sacred sex and ecofeminism. It is an alchemical act of Calcination, Dissolution, Separation and Conjunction through the physical (or Salted) Body.
Accounts of Aboriginal women healers are remembered - who speak of their mystical abilities to draw sticks out of the bodies of the unwell, and cover their new-borns in earth in ceremonial purification.
Erotic stirrings can render a new cosmos, a world defined by a new aesthetic and a new scheme of meaning. We live in many worlds in various stages of becoming and dying. The intensity of eros excavates the raw materials for a new construction, a new way of imagining and participating in life. In a tight configuration, innocence is ever exposed, examined, and penetrated - initiated - and the aggressive , spoiling, processing capacities are tempered and qualified by purity of movement as an act (Thomas Moore, The Dark Eros, 1994).
