she kept bearing the same fruit

year after year, always the same… they thought

so they got upset with her

didn’t appreciate her green leaves

her long grasses

her flowing river tongues anymore

they forgot her flowers bloomed with sweet nectar

her woods fell and she was taken deep into eternal sleep

they all missed her: the hedgehogs, the aphids, the wolves, the fungi, the ferns, the slugs, the frogs

maybe she died, maybe she multiplied into a swarm of wondering selves

since then however, every-time they passed a cave

or encountered a hole in the ground

or a hole in the sky, or a hole in their day

they heard her song
